Join us on October 15, 2023, for the pinnacle of the Beijing Music Festival! This year, we are delighted to introduce the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra, a collective of exceptionally talented young musicians hailing from various European countries. They will take up the role of the festival’s resident orchestra, infusing classical music with a fresh perspective and vibrant energy.

Under the guidance of the British conductor John Warner, the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra will embark on a profound century-spanning exploration of Gustav Mahler’s timeless compositions with four different concerts. This remarkable journey not only celebrates Mahler’s classics but also showcases the groundbreaking creations of young composers from China and around the world. Composers such as Zhenyan Li, Sasha Scott, Faykueen Wang, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Huang Ruo, Shen Yiwen and Wang Ying engage in a captivating dialogue with the classics, resulting in a unique fusion of the old and the new.

The festival’s centerpiece is the grand closing performance on October 15, where the Mahler Foundation Festival Orchestra and China’s New Classical Chamber Orchestra will join forces to inaugurate the festivities with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World”. This spectacular collaboration transcends generations and borders, showcasing the harmonious blend of classical music from around the world.

With the theme “Music-Youth-Future-Attitude”, the festival’s mission of nurturing youth development in the classical music realm is further manifested through the performances of outstanding young musicians. These include the renowned Chinese sheng player Wu Wei, countertenor Liu Shen, pianist Ju Xiaofu, baritone Wang Yunpeng, and mezzo-soprano Han Yinpei.

As we immerse ourselves in Beijing’s classical music heritage, the Beijing Music Festival is more than just a series of performances; it is a celebration of the future of classical music. This festival serves as a powerful platform for amplifying the voices of young musicians on the global stage, offering them an opportunity to shine worldwide.
